The Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi has selected Dr. Amba Kulkarni from the Department of Sanskrit Studies at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) for the award of Vishishta Sanskrit Sevavrati Sammaan for the year 2015. This award is instituted for non Sanskritist professionals who have dedicated their life for Sanskrit and have made substantial contribution to the studies and research on Sanskrit based knowledge system or, have done significant work for promotion of Sanskrit Education. The award was presented by Prof. P N Shastry, Vice-Chancellor of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan on 26th August 2015 and carries prize money of Rs.
1 lakh and a citation. Amba Kulkarni, Associate Professor at UoH has a MA (Sanskrit), M.Sc. (Maths), M.Tech (CSE, IIT, Kanpur) and Ph.D (Applied Linguistics, University of Hyderabad). Her areas of research include – Bridging the gap between Science and Technology in Sanskrit Texts and the Modern Science and Technology, with special emphasis on Language Technology, Computer Science and Mathematics. For the last 12 years, she has been engaged in the development of computational tools for Sanskrit. In 2012 during World Sanskrit Conference the online tools were launched by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan was established in 15th October, 1970 as an autonomous organisation registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 (Act XXI of 1860) for the development and promotion of Sanskrit all over the country. It is fully funded by Government of India. It functions as an apex body for propagation and development of Sanskrit and assists the Ministry of Human Resource Development in formulating and implementing various plans and schemes for the development of Sanskrit studies. Rashtriya Sanskrit Sans than has now been declared as Deemed University on the recommendation of University Grants Commission by the MHRD in 2002. The Consortium of 7 institutes working on 'Development of Sanskrit computational toolkit and SanskritÂHindi Machine Translation system' is engaged in developing various computational tools for Sanskrit analysis which assist a reader in understanding Sanskrit texts. Reading and understanding a Sanskrit Text involves following steps. padaccheda. samasta-pada-paricaya. Sabda-viSleshaNa. aakaamkshaa.
anvaya A reader for with hindi and English translation is now available in e-book format which allows a reader to navigate through all the above steps and understand the text in a better way. In future it is possible to develop similar readers semi-automatically with the help of following tools. These tools are being developed by the Sanskrit Consortium with financial support from TDIL programme, DIT, Govt. A simple tool for is available. The shows the subantas and tingantas (inflectional forms of a noun or a verb). It also handles derivational morphology showing kridanta and taddhita forms.
