I bring this up because there is a thoughtful conversation going on in a I shared this morning. This update featured Emerson’s and a short video where he describes good and bad alarms and where a plant might be with respect to the ISA 18.2 standard. Here’s the short minute and a half video,. A comment came in from an oil & gas industry veteran with long experience in instrumentation and controls: This may be radical but I have often wondered why alarm management is even necessary. Project Teams create the alarms during the design of the facility and then there is a major effort to manage the alarms. That seems to be a very inefficient process. Why couldn’t there be proper templates and guides so that when the alarms are originally created, they are proper and meet all of the industry and owner practices so that alarm management is not necessary.
When the facility design is complete, the alarm system is proper and does not have to be managed. It just seems all industries have accepted the historical processes which involves creating an alarm volume or flood problem and then correcting it later.
He added: I have one additional thought. I believe that most of the tools that have been created for alarm management were developed specifically for existing facilities that already have alarm problems.
I believe the tools assume an alarm problem already exists. Today, we have to find every single opportunity to stop and reverse the historical trend of escalating project costs. Allowing alarms to be created like they have for decades and then using tools primarily intended for operating facilities to manage alarms for new facilities (i.e.
Rework) seems inefficient and costly. Can there be different tools, guides and templates for greenfield projects that eliminates the rework process?
Can we get it right when the alarms are created so that no management or rework is necessary? I shared these thoughts with Matt and he responded back: Many years ago, I was told that alarms use to “cost” (assume $) on control systems so alarm creation was limited. Sometime later these alarms became free and this allowed the process engineers, project teams and/or plant managers the ability to add whatever alarms they thought ‘might’ be needed by ‘someone’ without any focus on the result of these additions to the person running the board.
I have seen alarms that were defaulted to be enabled on every point in some systems. All the projects that I have been involved with recently have some form of alarm rationalization being done (new and migrations). We have been pushing the ISA 18.2 alarm management process and specifically making anyone asking for an alarm to have it follow an alarm rationalization process and/or fill out the items (recommended action, time to respond, consequence of inaction, probably cause and design information).
This really helps identify if it really should be an alarm for the person running the board or if it should be something different. I agree with what you are saying and I believe that most are starting to or already doing that in today’s project executionsit just doesn’t mean that projects did it 15, 10 or even 5 years ago when they initially configured the system and now something must be done.
There have been some good presentations at Exchange the last couple years on people going thru the alarm management process. They indicated a painful and very difficult process because of logistics of getting everyone needed together in a running facility but all of them seemed to have seen value after completing just portions of their facilities and now have processes in place to keep it from occurring again. This is Jim Cahill, and welcome to another edition of “5 Questions for an Emerson Expert” podcast series.
Today, I’m joined by Jessica Jordan. She’s a marketing product manager for the DeltaV team for Emerson Automation Solutions. Welcome, Jessica. Jessica: Thanks for having me, Jim. Jim: Well, it’s great that you’re here.
So let’s start with, what made you decide to pursue a STEM-based career? Jessica: Well, Jim, that’s a really good question. I grew up in South Alabama, and traditionally, women in the south were not pushed to pursue technical career paths. They were more homemakers or moms. And the harder I was pushed to conform into that box, the quicker I wanted to get out of it. I was naturally a problem solver and curious. And, actually, my first career I wanted to pursue was an astronaut.
But as I went through school and got ready for college and looked at the technical paths available to me, engineering seemed like a good fit. I was good at the math I was good at the science, and, let’s face it, the pay wasn’t gonna be that bad, either. So here I am. Jim: Well, that’s great. So from getting that degree in engineering, what led you to a career in the field of process automation? Jessica: A little bit of luck, to be honest with you, being in the right place at the right time. I started my career in automation as a co-op for Ciba Specialty Chemicals.
And when I interviewed for the job, I actually had to Google, “What is automation?” I had no idea what it was. When I was in school getting my degree in chemical engineering, we didn’t really learn about, what is process automation, what is this disruptive technology, and what are all of the endless possibilities in this industry. So as I went through my first co-op, I fell in love with automation. And now that the industry is evolving so quickly, it’s amazing to see all of the different opportunities that are available. And tell us about a recent challenge that you’ve been working on to solve. Jessica: So I’m the product marketing manager for one of our newest, most disruptive technologies, the, and it’s a very interesting project to be working on in the fact that I really have to be a strategist here. I have to learn to anticipate the problems and pivot around the pitfalls.
I think one of the most challenging things to do is really make a conscious effort to work on an integrated team. You have to be on the cutting edge of technology, while managing current customer expectations, while trying to penetrate a new market and capture that, all of which require you to look out of different frames and have different perspectives. And doing that in a real-time fashion is a big challenge that we’re currently faced with. Jim: Well, I know that was announced a few months ago, and it looks some of your work is paying off with the interest and everything we see out there. So kind of stepping outside the office and the things that you do around here and in our world of process automation, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Jessica: So I like to say that I’m a jack of all trades and a master at none. I’ve always been naturally curious in how things work, so I love to just dive into projects, learn how they’re made, learn how they’re built. But the challenge with that is I get bored very easily. So I oftentimes end up starting many more projects than I complete. Another fun fact is that I actually live off the grid, on a farm. And so, as a mom, I like to spend a lot of time with my family, and being in that environment really enables us to kind of slow down, teach my son how to be curious about the world and how it works, get dirt under his nails, and help him to appreciate everything that we’ve earned. Jim: Well, that’s fantastic.

You’re in here, immersed on the grid all the time and get to break away from all that. I bet that’s really energizing. And I guess my final question for you, with a lot of the new people that we have coming into our world of process automation and process manufacturing and everything, what advice would you have for someone that’s coming into the industry? Jessica: I think for younger generations coming into the industry, I want to tell them, “Picture where you want to be and don’t set a limit to it. Picture where you want to be, and then not only make a plan, but own the plan on how to get there. And push yourself to consciously make really smart, really disciplined decisions.” I think that rising above mediocrity is not a hard thing to accomplish, but you have to have enough discipline to make really smart decisions now to get there. And then the last thing, which I’ll tell everyone, just always stay curious and always ask why.

From the DeltaV Explorer, he shows inputs and outputs used to control and diagnose this drive. From this point, Rune displays these inputs and outputs coming into a control strategy in the DeltaV Control Studio, just like other forms of I/O connected into the system.

Author: Generally, we (carbon-based lifeforms) are terrible when it comes to selecting a secure password for our computers or software programs. This comes from not being prepared for the inevitable password question when installing new software or setting up new hardware.
We panic and select something that often is way too common or easy to remember but that also means that it will be too easy for a hacker to guess or to “crack”. We just say “I’ll come back and change that later so I’ll just use one that is easy to remember for now” but we seldom remember to do so. Nobody said that effective credentials management was convenient but it beats the inconvenience of being hacked! Consider doing the following:. Use combinations of numbers, upper- and lower-case letters and special characters.
Select a suitable length of at least 8 characters but the longer, the better. Try using pass-phrases (or derivatives of a phrase) like:. “IloveCybersecurity!” or “Whatyamacallit?”. “I love to run 5 miles Every Day” is used as: Iltr5mED!. Or use something that IS clearly misspelled. Consider using password vaults to manage your growing list of passwords. Consider changing your passwords regularly, even when you are not prompted to do so.
Consider using 2-Factor Authentication log-in techniques which generally require two forms of authentication before you can enter the site/program. Consider avoiding the following:. Avoid using single, common words or strings of numbers (i.e. 22222222, 12345678, etc.). Avoid using personal data in your password (i.e. Your name, address, phone numbers, birthday or other information that may be available on social media.
Do not use the same password for multiple accounts or sites (wow, that’s a lot of passwords to remember). Avoid writing these passwords down or compiling a spreadsheet and storing them on your computer (yes, password-protected spreadsheets can be easily cracked). Do not answer prompts to auto-save your password for a site with an automatic “yes” (especially when using shared devices).
Avoid using the same password again on a given site or program. Never share your password(s) with anyone! Using a Password Manager For users with large amounts of passwords to manage, there are commercial solutions available that will store and manage your password library. Depending on the selected vendor, these managers store your passwords for you and automatically fill out your log-in forms. Preferably, choose offline versions of such password management programs, but if it is important to use the convenience of online synchronization features, just make sure you change passwords frequently and have a plan in case the program vendor’s database is somehow compromised by hackers. Remove Default Passwords For users who utilize software that is delivered or installed with “default” passwords, disable, delete or change the default passwords to something other than what was delivered with the system as soon as possible.
Industrial Control Systems also rely on user credentials and similar recommendations apply to those passwords. For DeltaV systems, the DeltaV Security Manual provides guidance around passwords complexity, default passwords, expiration period and prompt, as well as password reuse.

As commercially available off-the-shelf operating systems and hardware came on the scene for control systems, they brought with them rapid performance improvements that translated into increase functionality and ease of use. They also brought with them the need to provide ongoing software and hardware updates to remain secure, reliable and available. In a Maintenance Technology article, Emerson’s highlights how critical it is to keep control systems up to date.

Leaving the system and its operating environment unpatched or out of date means exposing the plant to potential equipment failure and cyber attacks. In addition, it is essential to maintain the hardware and software backbone on which the automation system relies. Operating systems require regular security patches as does automation system software that requires periodic updates, patches and hotfixes. Hardware components also have a lifespan to consider.
Eight years ago, Microsoft Windows 7 was released, meaning a 9-yr.-old system today is likely running Windows XP (retired) or Windows Vista (soon to be retired). Hardware failure on a Windows XP or Windows Vista machine will be tremendously difficult to remedy. Because these operating systems are either no longer supported, or soon to be retired, manufacturers have ceased producing computers or parts for these systems. At best, users will be able to find used replacement parts that are unreliable themselves, due to their age.
At worst, they could be facing an outage until they can complete an emergency upgrade. Yoga outlines common concerns manufacturers have when it comes to upgrading parts of the system:. What if something breaks?. We don’t have time. Expensive systems should work.

This includes reviewing the life expectancies of components including control system software, PC-based workstations, controllers, I/O cards, networking components, virtualization infrastructure and power supplies. Working with the automation supplier, this information combined with a and ROI analysis a key in developing a lifecycle plan. Site evaluations include a detailed review of: component firmware, lifecycles, cyber-security issues, plant performance and Key Performance Indicators, and value-add opportunities. On the 27 th of June 2017, we became aware of the “ Petya ransomware/malware” (also called NotPetya) cyber-attack spreading throughout the world causing computers to be encrypted and victims to see a request for ransom on their computer screens. This ransomware is still under investigation, however it appears similar to the “WannyCry ransomware”. The Petya malware exploits a Microsoft Windows vulnerability in the SMB (Server Message Block) protocol, as well as other unconfirmed exploits (including credential harvesting and remote execution utilities), which allows it to spread within networks. The ransomware also appears to also overwrite the Master Boot Record (MBR).
Multiple global organizations have reported network outages, including government and critical infrastructure operators. Ransomware attacks are becoming much more common, but they are now seen paired with exploits that spread as a network worm. The recent WannaCry attacks in May 2017 highlighted that many Windows O/S systems were not (maybe still are not) patched for the SMB vulnerability. Further to this, the fact that Petya ransomware seemingly spread primarily using this same vulnerability shows that many systems may still be vulnerable, despite the recent attention from the WannaCry infection.
